Successful Workshop Strategies

  • Use your exhibits. They are your best resource. Provide time and activities that allow teachers to explore your facility in depth
  • Consult with School districts about appropriate scheduling; consult the district school coordinator about appropriate scheduling; avoid testing periods
  • Provide educational materials of proven merit that the teachers can bring back for use in the classroom
  • Open with an ice breaking activity that helps the participants meet one another
  • Include as many hands-on, minds-on, interactive components as possible; avoid lectures and talking heads
  • After each of the workshop activities, provide time for reflection and discussion of how they can be integrated into the school curriculum
  • When possible give participants ownership of the topics/issues covered in the workshop by allowing them to choose those topics they would like to explore further
  • If the workshops are being held at a science institute or nature center try to include at least one activity in the morning and one activity in the afternoon
  • Provide special bonuses for participants like prizes, special lectures, behind the scenes tours
  • Have teachers fill out a form with pertinent information including address, school address, grade level taught, etc. This will help in providing follow up materials and marketing your future programs
  • Provide appetizing refreshments and a comfortable workshop environment
